Carl Barcelona knows what a difference dedicated higher education professionals can make.
Barcelona, who grew up in San Diego after immigrating to San Diego at a young age, is a first-generation college student who overcame a learning disability diagnosis thanks to his own persistence — and the help of others. Now, he strives to help other students succeed through a career in higher education.
"I was fortunate to be supported by professionals who genuinely cared about my success and well-being," he said. "Their guidance inspired me to pursue a similar path. I want people to see that no matter how great the obstacles may seem, they are capable of rising above them."
As a leadership studies major, Barcelona appreciated the strong sense of community and meaningful connections with his fellow students. He also said he was able to strengthen his "soft skills," such as communication, collaboration and self-awareness. He selected Leadership Studies Director Lisa Gates as his Most Influential Faculty Member.
"Dr. Gates embodies the kind of professional I aspire to become," he said. "During moments when things felt uncertain or overwhelming, she reminded me that I have a purpose and helped me reconnect with my ‘why.’”
