About Us

Established in mid-2000, the National Center serves as a source of ideas on school design and educational programming for educators, policy makers, and design professionals. The National Center facilitates focused discussion on the relationship between educational programming and school design and disseminates the outcomes to interested parties.

Rationale

New technologies, changing demographics, and evolving economic forces continue to affect the planning, design, and construction of schools in the 21st century. A growing body of research underscores the critical role school facilities play in the academic success of elementary and secondary school students. With this in mind, the National Center for the 21st Century Schoolhouse fosters an informed dialogue, connecting educational program with school design and encouraging long-term planning on behalf of students, parents, community members, and educators.

Function

The National Center for the Twenty-first Century Schoolhouse will serve as:

  • A source of accurate data,
  • A source of sound analysis,
  • A source of quality training,
  • A forum for interest groups, and
  • A facilitator of productive relationships.

Acknowledgment of Support

The National Center for the 21st Century Schoolhouse, in conjunction with the College of Education at San Diego State University, wishes to acknowledge the financial contributions which support the National Center's ability to pursue the following mission:

The National Center for the Twenty-first Century Schoolhouse supports the planning, design, and construction of learner-centered school facilities through communication, research, and training.

The National Center recognizes the founding support of the America's Schoolhouse Council (ASC), an alliance of eight leading educational full service architectural firms in the United States dedicated to promoting excellence in planning, building and maintaining the nation's schools.

We also wish to thank the Chancellor's Office of the California State University for a grant to support the initial two years of the National Center for the 21st Century Schoolhouse operation. This grant supported innovations at a CSU campus that enables the University to provide increased service to its region and to the State of California.
