It can seem daunting trying to find an affordable graduate program. There are many opportunities and resources that provide financial support to those seeking a career in education. Below you will find just a few of the vast SDSU, state level, and national level financial resources that there are for prospective graduate students.

 

SDSU Scholarships/Grants

SDSU has many scholarship opportunities for undergraduate and/or graduate students purusing a career in education and education counseling. The application for these scholarships can be found on the SDSU Scholarships database which is open from April to August in each academic year. Some scholarships may require a FAFSA or California Dream Act application, but it is suggested that students contact the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships.

Below you will find just a few of the multiple scholarships and grants offered to students through SDSU. It is recommended that you speak to each graduate program for other potential scholarship information. 

The Betsey Love Biondo Student Teacher Endowed Scholarship will provide scholarship support to students in the College of Education who are pursuing a teaching credential. Recipients must intend to pursue a teaching career at a public institution. Recipients must be student teaching during the semester the scholarship is received.

The Dr. Christianna Alger Memorial Endowed Scholarship will be utilized by the College of Education for scholarships to students in the Teacher Education Program.

The CalRTA Laura E. Settle Scholarship will provide scholarship support to Single Subject or Multiple Subject Credential program students in the College of Education.

The Dryer Family Endowed Scholarship will provide scholarship support to students in the in the College of Education who are pursuing any one of the following degrees: 

  1. Masters of Arts in Postsecondary Educational Leadership with a Specialization in Student Affairs
  2. Masters of Science in Counseling with a specialization in School Counseling and the California Pupil Personnel Services Credential in School Counseling
  3. Education Specialist (Ed.S.) in School Psychology and the California Pupil Personnel Services Credential in School Psychology
  4. Masters of Arts PK-12 Educational Leadership
  5. Doctorate in Education in Educational Leadership PK-12 concentration
  6. Single Subject Credential
  7. Multiple Subject Credential
  8. Master of Arts in Teaching in Elementary Education and Secondary Education

The Breece and Janet Sloan Memorial Scholarship is for students entering the first year of a teaching credential, master’s, or doctoral program in the College of Education.

The Barbara Erickson Sisk Scholarship will be used to support Single Subject or Multiple Subject Credential program student scholarships within the College of Education.

The award for this scholarship is $2500. 

The Carol and Larry Holt Scholarship will provide scholarship support to teaching credential students in the College of Education and Mathematics and Statistics undergraduate students in the College of Sciences.

The award for this scholarship is $2500. 

The Catherine Y. Lodge Memorial Scholarship is to provide scholarship support to students in the Department of Teacher Education within the College of Education who have applied to, or are currently enrolled in, the Multiple Subject Credential Program.

The Davene Gibson Scholarship provides support for scholarships to students studying Special Education in the College of Education.

The Cynthia L. Uline Doctoral Research Scholarship will provide scholarship support to students in the Ed.D. Program in Educational Leadership with a PK-12 Concentration in the College of Education to support dissertation research centered on the potential of green schools as healthy, student-centered, ecologically responsive, and economically viable places for learning. Green schools are education’s contribution to the sustainability movement, a movement which captures the interface between human civilization and the natural world and emphasizes the degree to which human beings choose to live within the ecological carrying capacity of planet earth, presently and into the future. Beyond conserving energy, decreasing stress on natural resources, preserving surrounding habitats, and reducing waste, green school buildings serve as 3-D textbooks, modeling socio-ecologically aware norms and practices and improving the ecological literacy of students, teachers, administrators, and community members. In green schools, learning tends to be intelligently integrated with nature, place/problem/project-centered, appropriately individualized, and intentionally grounded in both local places and global socio-ecological systems. All these aspects of green schools present appropriate topics of research.

The Helen and Charles Rappe Teaching Excellence Endowed Scholarship will be utilized by the College of Education for scholarships to students pursuing a teaching credential.

The Elijah James Blum Memorial Endowed Award will be utilized by the College of Arts and Letters for awards to students pursuing a degree in History or Social Science with the aspiration of teaching in K-12 education.

The Alfred & Vera Einstein Memorial Scholarship is to provide support for scholarships to students in the Teaching Credential or Conditional Teaching Credential program.

The Dr. Clare B. and Loch Crane, Sr. Endowed Scholarshi will provide support to undergraduate students in the College of Arts and Letters pursuing a degree in Comparative Literature, English, Social Science, or Spanish in preparation for or with the intent to pursue the single subject teaching credential at San Diego State University.

The Dr. Ed Reed Endowed Scholarship provides scholarship support to students who are enrolled in the Music Single Subject Teaching Credential Program for Instrumental Music.

 

The Dr. Samuel M. Ciccati Endowed Scholarship will be utilized by the College of Education for scholarships to students within the School of Teacher Education. Recipients must be single subject teaching credential students in the College of Education at San Diego State University with the intention to teach at a secondary level (grades 6 — 12).

The Elizabeth Benjamin Letsinger Education Scholarship will provide scholarship support to Multiple Subject Credential, Master of Arts in Education (MEd) in Elementary Curriculum & Instruction, or the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) in Elementary Education students in the College of Education.

The Janet Sinegal Scholarship provides scholarship support for teaching credential students in the College of Education’s Credential Program.

The Leoma Shaver Beatty Endowed Scholarship will provide scholarship support to new transfer students from Imperial Valley College who have plans to obtain a teaching credential.

The Margaret “Robin” Murphy Memorial Scholarship will provide support to students pursuing a credential in the single subject teaching program for Physical Education in the School of Teacher Education in the College of Education.

The Mary Alys Skulavik and Vera Jo Skulavik Endowed Scholarship will provide scholarship support to students in the College of Education. Recipient(s) must be pursuing a teaching credential OR an undergraduate pursuing a major in Liberal Studies or Child Development in the College of Education.

The Mary Catherine Martinez Memorial Scholarship will provide scholarship support for Multiple Subject Credential program students intending to teach elementary school.

The Millie Agostino Memorial Scholarship will provide support to students in the Department of Dual Language and English Learner Education of the College of Education. Recipients must be pursuing a Single Subject or Multiple Subject Bilingual Teaching Credential in Spanish.

The award for this scholarship is $1500.

The Miriam Paine Memorial Endowed Scholarship will provide scholarship support to students pursuing a teaching credential in Physical Education in the School of Teacher Education in the College of Education.

Russ was a special education teacher in Santee during his teaching career. In his memory, Judy encourages a student or teacher who is pursuing a special education or multiple subject credential to apply for this scholarship. Individuals who have applied to, or are currently enrolled in, a Special Education or Multiple Subject Credential program are invited to apply for the Russ & Judy James Scholarship.

The Gertrude Bell Scholarship provides support for scholarships to students studying Counseling and School Psychology in the College of Education.

The School of Social Work Scholarship is provide support for scholarships to students studying Social Work in the School of Social Work in the College of Health and Human Services.

The Mark Todd Sandways Memorial Scholarship is to provide scholarship support for graduate students majoring in Social Work.

The Jane Beers School of Social Work Endowed Scholarship will be utilized by the College of Health and Human Services for scholarships to graduate students in the School of Social Work.

 

The Norma Funderburk Scholarship is an endowment whose annual income distributions will be used to support student scholarship(s) within the School of Social Work.

 

State Level Scholarships/Grants

National level scholarships are awarded for conducting training, research, or participating in travel to students throughout the country.

Below you will find a few of the multiple scholarships and grants offered to students by various organizations or institutions in California.

For Undergraduate Cal Grant A and B recipients who plan to enroll in a teaching credential program (TCP) after they receive their bachelor's degree may be eligible to renew their Cal Grant award for an additional year. The additional year of payment is provided to students who are seeking an initial teaching credential and cannot be used for other graduate level courses of study.

Awards up to $20,000 to students currently enrolled in a professional preparation program approved by the Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) and working towards earning their preliminary teaching or pupil personnel services credential. In order to be eligible for this grant, the recipient must be pursuing a credential or graduate program in one of the following: school counseling, social work, school psychology, or preliminary teaching.

The North Shores, Division 78, California Retired Teachers Scholarship Foundation Inc. is offering scholarships of $3000.00 each to eligible Juniors, Seniors and Graduate Students who have a GPA of 3.0 or better and are pursuing a California Teaching Credential.

The Residency Year Scholarship is designed to serve candidates in CSU teacher residency programs and is available to those committed to teaching in a high-need school for at least two years.

National Level Scholarships/Grants

National level scholarships are awards for either study, research, or travel that is offered by an agency to students throughout the country along with other eligibility factors.

Below are a few of the multiple scholarships and grants offered to students from the nation. 

Awarding $600 to each Black incoming TFA corps member and $1000 to 2nd-year corps members who commit to teaching a 3rd year in a predominantly low-income school.

Eligible applicants qualify for a minimum of $4,000 (and up to $5,000) in grant funds and a minimum of $20,000 (up to $25,000) in direct tuition payments to American University.

Provides grants of up to $4,000 a year to students who are completing or plan to complete coursework needed to begin a career in teaching.

Through the Noyce credential/master's degree fellowship program candidates receive a fellowship of at least $10,000 as a credential/master's degree fellowship and a stipend of $10,000 during each of the first four years of teaching.

Teachers may receive up to either $5,000 or $17,500 of loan cancellation on direct subsidized and unsubsidized loans and subsidized and unsubsidized Federal Stafford Loans if they teach in a low-income school. A fully qualified elementary or secondary teacher is eligible for up to $5,000 in loan forgiveness if they teach in a low-income school. Teachers may receive up to $17,500 in loan forgiveness if they are fully qualified and are a teacher of mathematics or science in an eligible secondary school or a special education teacher.
