Welcome to the supplemental application portal for the Joint Ph.D. Program (JDP) in Education. The mission of the Joint Ph.D. Program in Education offered by San Diego State University and Claremont Graduate University is to develop scholars who are committed to research on democratic schooling, social justice and equal educational outcomes for all students, and the improvement of educational systems serving diverse communities.

All applicants must have completed a master’s degree program prior to admission and reside in San Diego or Imperial counties or commit to relocating if admitted to the program.

Steps to Apply

Request that your official transcripts be sent to SDSU, following instructions on our Submit Test Scores and Transcripts page.

3. Apply to the Program

Submit the program application and required documents as directed below:

Please gather the items below and have them ready to upload:

Personal Statement: Write a 2-3 page personal statement. The statement should include your reasons for seeking admissions to this particular doctoral program, your perceived strengths and weaknesses in preparation for doctoral study, your research interests, and your relevant academic and employment experiences.

Indicate why you believe the SDSU/CGU Joint PhD Program in Education is appropriate for you.

Be sure to include at least 2 faculty members from each campus with whom you would like to work based on your thorough knowledge of their work. The personal statement should be typed and double spaced. 

Prepare a current resumé or or curriculum vitae listing work experience, education, awards, publications, and presentations.
Download unofficial transcripts (or scan a paper transcript) for every institution, one file per institution, and be prepared to upload to the online program application. This is in addition to, not a substitution for, having official transcripts sent to SDSU Graduate Admissions office.
Contact 3 individuals who you have interacted with both personally and professionally and would be able to write a letter of recommendation for you. Please request that they write their letter and have it ready for when the system is available since they will be needed quickly. Recommenders will submit their letters directly into the Online Program Application.
