Honoring & Affirming the Roots and Minds of Native American Youth (HARMONY): A Collaboration to Prepare School Psychologists and School Counselors to Serve Native American Youth in Special Education

Native American and Indigenous Scholars Collaborative

The Native American and Indigenous Scholars Collaborative (HARMONY) is designed to help reduce the profound gap in the number of school counselors and school psychologists appropriately trained to respond to the needs of Native American and Indigenous (NAI) youth served in special education.

HARMONY provides an inter-professional cohort model, NAI  mentors and collaborators, models, readings, an ongoing specialty seminar, and supervised collaborative clinical experiences at Bonsall High School and Vivian Banks Charter Elementary School.

We honor the history, journey, and resilience of the members of Pala Community and their youth. Their cultural assets will be woven into our work with the youth and their teachers, as we emphasize strength-based, culturally adapted, evidence-based interventions while recognizing the influence of historical trauma and colonization.

Combined with graduate studies and coursework, we learn and use specialized knowledge to differentiate differences from disability, and to help design and deliver culturally appropriate pedagogical and psychological services.

HARMONY Project Students are accepted to and concurrently enrolled in one of two nationally recognized graduate programs: School Psychology or School Counseling.

HARMONY is funded by the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Special Education Programs. H325M250104
