Subject Matter Prep - Music
1. Each program of subject matter preparation for the Single Subject Teaching Credential in music shall include
a. A minimum of 30 semester units (or 45 quarter units) of core coursework in music subjects and related subjects that are commonly taught in departmentalized classes in California public schools, and
b. A minimum of 15 semester units (or 22 quarter units) of coursework that provides a depth of study of the subject.
These two requirements are elaborated in Preconditions 2 and 3.
The Music Major in Preparation for the Single Subject Teaching Credential (PDF) requires 78 total units, with 17 units from upper division courses.
2. The core of the program shall include coursework in (or directly related to) the following subjects that are commonly taught in departmentalized classes of music and related subjects in the public schools, including
- General Music
- Music theory
- Music History
- Ensemble Performance
- Applied Instrumental or Vocal Music

A depth of study in the program shall be designed to supplement the core of the program.
The following courses extend the breadth and depth of the program:
- M151: Western and world music overview (3 units)
- Music Education Practicum I, II, III, IV (8 units)
- M343: Elementary Focus has Music Literature for Children and 3 units of music elective or M554: Secondary Focus has Music Literature for Band, Orchestra, or Choir (6 units)
