For all the time she spent at SDSU as an undergrad, Eunice Corpuz found her most memorable learning opportunities off campus and out in her home community of San Diego. As a child development major, she had the opportunity to complete lab placements at a pair of local schools.

“These experiences directly showed me the impactful role that I play in the lives of young children, families and my mentor teachers,” Corpuz said. “I will always remember the meaningful connections and moments that have helped shape my understanding of teaching, as well as strengthened my confidence and passion for working with children.”

The placements solidified Corpuz’s aspiration to become an elementary school teacher in San Diego — a dream she hopes will honor her third-grade teacher, Mrs. Wegner, who empowered her to become the adult she is today. At SDSU, she found another mentor in lecturer Lisa Beltran, whom Corpuz said provided her with the encouragement and strength necessary to overcome academic struggles and feel emotionally supported.

But her biggest supporters, Corpuz notes, are the ones who have been there since the beginning.

“I come from a family of two Filipino immigrant parents who have been my loudest cheerleaders throughout my academic journey,” she said. “I am forever grateful for the sacrifices they have made to provide me with this incredible opportunity. Thank you, Mom and Dad!”
