When looking back on her experience in SDSU's school counseling master's program, Elysabeth Emalani Rivera Buncab says one aspect stands out among all others — the people.

"My cohort members have become real friends who actually check in on each other, hold each other accountable and make you feel seen," she explained. "There's a real sense that everyone, from peers to professors, truly wants to see each other succeed."

And it's time to pay that forward. Buncab, who grew up in nearby Temecula, now aspires to become a school counselor who creates a supportive environment where students can feel seen, heard and valued.

"I want my space to be one where students feel comfortable enough to show up as their full selves, knowing they have someone truly in their corner," she said.

Throughout her program, Buncab said she took the opportunity to do "inner work," self-reflection that allowed her to grow and become a better version of herself. She selected Associate Professor Vanessa Placeres as her Most Influential Faculty Member for always challenging her to think more deeply and grow.

"Dr. P always came ready to push not only me but all her students to truly do the work," Buncab said. "She has this amazing balance of never trying to save us, but always knowing exactly what to say when we need that extra lift or a reminder that we are all human. That kind of presence is rare, and it's something I hope to carry with me into my own work with students."
