BESO

Meet Our BESO Officers

Our officers help keep the organization organized, active, and connected. Each position plays an important role in supporting our members and helping the organization succeed.

The President leads the organization, runs meetings, sets meeting agendas, and represents the organization on campus and in the community. The President also oversees committees and works with other officers to support the organization’s goals.

The Vice President supports the President and leads meetings when the President is unavailable. They also assist with responsibilities assigned by the President and may step into the President’s role if the position becomes vacant.

The Treasurer manages the organization’s finances, including budgeting, dues, payments, bank accounts, and financial records. They also provide regular financial updates to members.

The Secretary keeps meeting minutes, manages organization correspondence, and maintains important records so members can stay informed and organized.

The Membership Officer focuses on recruiting, welcoming, educating, and retaining members. They also maintain the membership roster and keep membership information updated through the SDSU Presence Portal.

May D. Ovalles

May Ovalles is part of our DLE masters program. She was born and raised in the slums of Venezuela, and came to the U.S. as an English Language Learner. That experience shapes everything about how she teaches and advocates today.

"I know what it feels like to sit in a classroom not fully understanding the language around you, and I know what it means when a teacher takes the time to bridge that gap. That’s part of why I’ve never seen advocacy as optional. A dual-language educator once paved a path for me to be here, and I want to do the same for the students who come after me. Even when advocating for bilingual education feels difficult, especially now, I keep showing up, because I know I’m not doing it alone."
