About the Minor

Shape little minds and make a big impact! The Child Development Minor builds on our department’s mission to prepare anti-racist, anti-bias professionals to address contemporary issues that affect the development, health, and well-being of children, youth, adults, families, and communities.

Program Highlights

The minor is open to all students and introduces students to:

  • developmental theory
  • prevention
  • inclusive practices
  • advocacy
  • research in applied settings

Career Options

The minor provides a strong foundation for careers in:

  • education
  • health-related professions
  • human services
  • other meaningful fields of work

Courses

The minor in Child Development consists of a minimum of 19 units to include:

  • Child and Family Development 270, 270L
  • Psychology 101
  • 12 upper-division units selected from Child and Family Development courses

Courses in the minor may not be counted toward the major but may be used to satisfy preparation for the major and general education requirements, if applicable.

A minimum of 6 upper-division units must be completed in residence at San Diego State University.
