About the Minor

The Special Education Minor is designed to support students interested in careers involving individuals with disabilities by providing an essential background on the population, education, legislation, and societal factors related to equity and inclusion that affect them.

Program Highlights

The minor is open to all students and introduces students to:

  • Real-world observations in local classrooms working with students with disabilities
  • Gain a deeper understanding of the lived experiences of individuals with disabilities, with an emphasis on diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Build practical skills to support and advocate for individuals with disabilities across educational, healthcare, and professional settings.
  • Explore the history and evolution of disability legislation, services, and inclusion models in education and society.
  • Learn how special education systems work, including key laws, programs, and support services.

Career Options

The minor provides a strong foundation for careers in:

  • Teaching in general or special education
  • Nursing
  • Speech-Language Pathology
  • Psychology
  • Counseling

Courses

The minor consists of a minimum of 15 units, including:

  • GEN S 420 - Disability and Society (3 Units)
  • SPED 450 - Classroom Adaptations for Special Populations (3 Units)
  • SPED 501 - Typical and Atypical Learning Processes (3 Units)
  • SPED 502 - Field Experiences in General and Special Education (1 Unit)
  • SPED 530 - Issues in Autism (3 Units)
  • SPED 562 - Collaboration, Legislation, and Educational Planning in Special Education (2 Units)

Courses in the minor may not be counted toward the major.

A minimum of 6 upper-division units must be completed in residence at San Diego State University.
