Bio
Mona has been teaching undergrads and grad students in the Counseling & School Psychology dept. at SDSU since 2014. She has taught in the MFT, Online MA, School Counseling and School Psychology graduate programs and the undergraduate Minor in Counseling & Social Change. Her teaching interests include multi-cultural and group counseling skills, social justice issues in the field of mental health, and cultivating resilience in the face of adversity. From 2014-2017, Mona also served as the Clinic Administrator for SDSU’s off campus mental health clinic, The Center for Community Counseling and Engagement. She has been an AAMFT-Approved Supervisor since 2017 and is passionate about training new clinicians, particularly those from underserved populations.
Previously, Mona completed her undergraduate studies at UCSD, majoring in Linguistics with an emphasis on Romance Languages (Spanish and French) and Minoring in Japanese Studies. After graduating, she worked in high tech international marketing for 20 years before returning to graduate school at SDSU to become a licensed marriage and family therapist. In addition to her M.S. in Counseling, she completed two post-masters certificate programs in Latin American Family Therapy at Alliant University Mexico City campus and Narrative Therapy & Community Work from Narrative Initiatives San Diego.
In addition to teaching at SDSU, Mona owns a private practice where she supervises 5 associate MFTs and serves as a Co-Director and Board Member of NISD Counseling, a non-profit counseling & training center in Hillcrest with a staff of more than a dozen pre licensed and licensed MFTs.
