Credential and Advanced Authorization Programs

Preliminary Credentials

Teaching Credentials

A teaching credential is a state-issued license that allows an individual to teach in a public school. California law requires all teachers in CA public schools to hold a valid teaching credential. Approved College of Education teaching credential programs are offered in the following areas:

  • Bilingual General Education Credential Programs: The preliminary teaching credential in bilingual general education authorizes instruction in English and a target language, often Spanish, and is offered through the Department of Dual Language and English Learner Education.
  • General Education Credential Programs: The preliminary teaching credential in general education allows for instruction in English only and is offered through the School of Teacher Education.
  • Special Education Credential Programs: The preliminary education specialist credential to teach special education is offered through the Department of Special Education in three specializations: early childhood, mild to moderate support needs, and extensive support needs.

Administrative Services Credentials

A preliminary administrative services credential prepares effective school administrators and will show you how to inspire your colleagues, empower your students, and transform your school community.

Advanced Credentials

California has a 2-tier credential structure. A 5-year preliminary credential is the first credential issued to an individual after they meet the basic credential requirements. A clear credential is issued when all credential requirements have been completed. Clear a preliminary credential or learn more about one of our other advanced credential programs.

Added Authorizations

Added Authorizations are designed to allow teachers to earn an additional authorization to supplement the knowledge and skills gained in their preliminary teacher preparation program.
