Book Co-Edited by Machado-Casas Earns AESA Critics’ Choice Award
Multiple SDSU faculty members contributed articles to “Encyclopedia of Critical Understandings of Latinx and Global Education”
A book exploring the education of Latinx students worldwide by San Diego State University’s Margarita Machado-Casas has been named recipient of a 2022 Critics’ Choice Book Award by the American Educational Studies Association (AESA).
Machado-Casas, professor and chair in San Diego State University’s Department of Dual Language and English-Learner Education (DLE), co-edited “Encyclopedia of Critical Understandings of Latinx and Global Education” along with Yolanda Medina, associate professor at Borough of Manhattan Community College in New York.
Published in April, the book provides a global perspective on issues impacting the education of Latinx students, including transborder education, social justice and decolonizing practices, race and ethnicity, socioeconomics and indigenous languages.
“This award is confirmation that this type of research is necessary and important and that there is interest in it,” Machado-Casas said. “We're not just looking at what's happening in the United States, but recognizing that there are so many practices that we share, populations that we share and so much research that we can share. We have so much to learn from one another."
The AESA Critics’ Choice Award honors outstanding books it considers to be of interest to those in educational studies. “Encyclopedia of Critical Understandings of Latinx and Global Education” was one of 12 titles honored in 2022.
Multiple SDSU faculty members and alumni contributed articles for the book, including assistant professors Melissa A. Navarro Martell and Lluliana Alonso, and associate professors Sera Hernandez and Alberto Esquinca. The colorful cover, meanwhile, was designed on a contract basis by College of Education web and multimedia specialist Manny Uribe.
"I think that this provides us with an opportunity to highlight the excellent work that we're doing and the top scholars that we have here at SDSU and in the field of bilingual education,” Machado-Casas said. “In California we are the only autonomous credential program that's looking at multilingual learners. So it’s amazing for DLE to have so many of our colegas contributing their work and their expertise."
Machado-Casas will receive the award in early November at AESA’s annual conference in Pittsburgh.
